Josiah White is Serpentwithfeet, a project name that touches on prelapsarian notions of innocence and sin as deftly as White’s songs bridge R&B, gospel, classical, and electronic music. White grew up in a religious family in Baltimore, listening to classical music and gospel before moving to Philadelphia to study classical vocal training at the city’s University of the Arts. After a few years in Philly’s neo-soul scene, he moved to New York City. Inspired by a bad breakup and his desire to express his queerness in his music, White began writing and performing as Serpentwithfeet in 2013. He brought his disparate influences together on the Blisters EP, which featured production by the Haxan Cloak and was released by Tri Angle in 2016. A year later, the EP was reissued on vinyl. ~ Heather Phares
