At 18 years old, most artists are still searching for their voice. Makaio Huizar is already dissecting his. On February 28th, Makaio Huizar announced his debut EP, promising to be a vulnerable project.

On April 24, Makaio releases What Do You Want To Be When You’re Older?, a 7-song coming-of-age EP that plays like a diary written in real time. Blending bedroom pop intimacy with cinematic alternative textures, the project doesn’t just explore adolescence — it documents the emotional cost of it.

Across the EP, Makaio confronts mental health struggles, fractured family dynamics, unresolved childhood trauma, heartbreak, emotional dependency, accountability, and the quiet fear of growing into someone you don’t recognize. Each song builds on the last, forming a cohesive narrative arc rather than a loose collection of tracks. From the isolation of “Older,” to the haunting nostalgia of “Oceanside,” to the self-reckoning of “I’ve Never Been Much Of A Liar,” the project evolves alongside its narrator.

The closing track, “Stars,” lifts the EP into something expansive and vulnerable — answering the title’s question with ambition wrapped in self-doubt: he wants to be a star, even if he’s still learning to believe he deserves it.
With over 355,000 independent streams and growing recognition, this release marks more than momentum — it marks arrival. Makaio Huizar isn’t just an artist to watch. He’s an artist becoming.
